I am in the final stages of renovating an old spreader and have a few questions. For reference sake, here is a link (I hope) to pictures of the spreader:

In the first picture of the spreader you can see there is a new bolt where the pole is fixed as well as a second older bolt behind it. My assumption is that by fixing the pole with both bolts, you would prevent the pole moving up and down independently of the spreader. I assume this is important as you move from flat land to an incline. If bolted in both locations, it would torque the front axle no?

My second question involves where and how to fix the evener. In a previous thread on this subject I was told to do so via the use of a hammer strap. In the same picture there is a hammer strap that I welded up on top of the pole. My first inclination was to weld the hammer strap solid to the frame but quickly realized that this would prevent the up and down, independent movement of the pole. My current plan is to fix the hammer strap with two separate 1/2″ grade 8 bolts that would straddle the bolt fixing the pole to the frame. I would then drill another hole through the pole and secure the evener between the pole and the hammer strap with a removable pin.

Finally, what do folks use for lubricating oil and easily purchased dispensers?

Any opinions or new suggestions on this set-up would be greatly appreciated.

Goerge, here are a couple quick thoughts. I mostly looked at the first pic of the spreader. A good close up of the tongue connection. I would attack the tongue with one good bolt. That tongue should be free to go up and down as it wants to. That is a good and heavy hammer strap. One bolt or two throught the tongue will be fine. I am not sure how long your tongue is, but you want to move the evener away from the spreader as much as you can. When you turn hard left or right that horse is swinging back into the corner of the spreader and the wheel. Move them ahead so to keep them out of the gear. Measure to get the right distance between evener and neck yoke. Donn
