ParticipantHi all,
I’m Mike from Northern Illinois. I just bought my first horse ever, Pete. Pete’s a 16 yr old Belgian gelding. I’ve already bought a walk behind IHC plow and a McCormick deering No. 7 sickle mower. The future in laws have 3 acres of hay and since Pete eats a lot of it, I was hoping he could earn his keep every once in a while. Pete is a fully trained competition pulling horse. We are hoping with a little more training that he will enjoy some light farm work. I’ll try to post some pics as I get time. I look forward to learning as much as I can from this forum.February 28, 2010 at 7:36 pm #56388jac

ParticipantBest of luck in your new endevor.
A word of caution I would start really slow when introducing a competition pulling horse to any type of equipment. I had a former pulling horse that was sold to me as a wheeler in a 6 horse hitch and there were some really hairy points along the way. She settled down and I was able to work her for two years until she almost took my hand off when a log choker rattled and clinked off the steel evener one day.
I have also had one pair that were former pulling horses that were as good as gold when they were on the farm. When loaded and taken anywhere to work that had a crowd they were HOT.
It all depends on the horse and how you are with them and I wish you the best.

ParticipantThanks guys, we plan on being very cautious whenever we get him hitched. There will be a lot of basic training long before that point though(more for me than Pete).
