My family has lived on this ranch since the early 40’s, and up until the early 80’s we always had around 100 head of horses at a time. In that time, we lost 3 horses from injuries…. one of which got pushed into a cattle guard by the other horses, and had to be put down, the other 2 were from fence accidents. We use barbed wire on almost everything, and the 2 horses that we did lose were both from a wooden fence. They got run into it and pushed along the rail which split and ran into their chest, killing them…but not instantly. We also had one that got a huge chunk taken out of his neck as a foal, from a wooden fence. We’ve had a few cuts and such, from the wire, but they’re fixable. Needless to say, I very seldom use anything but barbed wire..it works for us.

We’d tossed around the idea of attending…although it would be just to watch. We have relations there, so could combine the visit.
If you do go, post it on here..maybe we’ll be there and can meet up?

Some very well put words here before me. I’m not quite so eloquent usually, but somehow eventually get my point across (usually 😉 ).
I guess I’d have to answer that the SFC will mean something different to each person, yet hopefully have some common points as well. I see it as a great starting place for something very good for all of us, to happen… be that education, or whatever. In a condensed and simplified version, I’d say the world will be a bit better place because of it’s existance, no matter what the outcome. There is nothing more powerful than education, and no better way to accomplish that than getting a group of people to open their eyes and minds to issues. I hope the SFC will give many people an opportunity to experience that. Will the SFC accomplish all it’s original goals?… well, I’m not able to predict that, and neither is anyone else, but it’s got as good of a chance as any. The thing I see that I really like is that it’s got a wonderful mix of people on board, and getting an even more broad mix all the time, from loggers and farmers to lawyers and doctors….this, in my thinking, is a good way for good things to get done. To me, the SFC is a “vehicle” if you will, for a chance to maybe have a bit of impact in the “steering” of our future. I’m sure that there’s going to be points along the journey that I may not agree with what’s happening, but I’m willing to try to look at the overall benefit and support that.
There’s lots more thoughts I have about it, but it’s below 0 here this morning still, and I’ve got to get the rest of the chores done, plus that will give me some more time to think of what I want to say. I really value the viewpoints on here and the previous posts…thinking is good for all of us, and every set of eyes has an opportunity to see things in a little different light.
I guess my final thought to try to leave with would be… why wouldn’t the SFC have a chance to make a difference??? As they say, every journey starts with the first step, and if that step isn’t ever taken, the journey never exists……

Been on board since the beginning. Lynn talked to us about it a couple years ago, and it’s a great idea and movement!

I like ’em….but then, I like a draft horse that looks like a draft horse! 😉 We’re not too far from them, and there’s alot of good horsemen in that area. It’s a good thing we don’t win the lotto…:D

My wife’s 5’7″ and throws harness on our 19h Percheron (she also did for years with Budweiser’s Clydes that were as tall). Just gotta get it right on your shoulder. I’m 5’9″ and do the same. It’s alot like bucking hay bales…once you get the technique right, it’s not near as hard to do.

They’re North of Missoula, MT, not too far from me. If we hadn’t just found another Percheron to match one of ours, I’d probably be really interested in them. If anyone wants, we could probably run down and look at them for them.

Bozeman’s a great place… lots of sunshine there. I have a few relatives that live there, and a few friends that went to that shoeing school..they all thought it was a good one.
Which MDHMA event did you go to? The one in Deerlodge or Missoula?

We’ve used both and they each seem to work just fine with docked tails. I think the bun bags are a bit nicer, since they lay flatter.

Hmmm..let’s see…. last Thursday night (10-08) it snowed about 4 inches.. then Saturday it was -17, Sunday -12, and yesterday -13, but it’s supposed to be about 50 and raining by Thursday. That’s a bit early for us to get that kind of cold! But it’s just going to make “Indian Summer” feel all that much better!
I like the Norwegian comment!! haha
