    am very poor with these computers, if I don’t reply I just got lost…crashed and burned. I have found that these little TV screens do not bounce well and I get very mad at them, very often

    welcome in the club :rolleyes:

    no experience with oxen, but the bulls of this breed we handle are renown for their ability to kick quick, good and high πŸ™

    @Donn Hewes
    thanks for sharing; I would need more draught power for a snowplow like yours πŸ˜‰
    the plow Sanhestar mentioned is here:

    how do the animals fare in the deep snow? irons, spikes, barefoot?
    anybody using oxen for this work?

    in reply to: Highland cattle?? #48881

    off topic

    I would love to get them in the woods with my husband a few times and maybe he would warm up to the idea of draft horses!

    why is it so often I keep hearing this? why are always women the ones that get started, find out and try and then have to convince their husbands to give alternatives a thought……

    no experience;
    however πŸ˜‰ in horses you take their height, double that and this is what you want the stalls to be long and wide…….

    in reply to: Intact bulls as draft power? #48762

    no matter the nose ring

    in an emergency that nose ring will not stop an attack
    just think of yourself how little pain you realize when you are agitated………
    it may be helpful in an every-day-life situation but not if things have come out of hand
    I very much enjoyed the video demonstrating exactly how you should pick up contact with cattle

    Question: can their whool be used for anything? felt, padding, insulation….???

    in reply to: Intact bulls as draft power? #48761

    but know that they are not computer programmed, and are completely unpredictable as such.

    πŸ˜€ can’t resist: this very unpredictability also applies to my computer…….

    back to bulls: may be it’s mainly a problem of disposition?
    in our meatproduction are primarily bulls, most in close quarters, and they need to be handled somehow, even when grown; there is any character you may think of: from the curious, friendly , docile, to the alphabulls, that will come at you when you haven’t even entered their box. some you can handle, others you shouldn’t even try.
    so my answer: it depends…..

    in reply to: head yoke question #48768

    If the pole is high then the back chain is tightened, if you are skidding off the ground loosened.

    Still trying to comprehend: if I adjust that chain according to what angle I’m working from, the first assumption won’t work: to keep their head at a 90Β° angle towards the pole; I’d rather change that chain though to keep the animals head in a for them most proficient way…

    in reply to: head yoke question #48769

    Lengthening, or shortening the length of the back loop of chain allows the yoke to tip forward until the chain is tight, and at the right angle.

    just to be sure I understood the principle: in the first picture, the chain in the back of the yoke could have used one or two more links to better fit the yoke for the heads? It also means: I have to adjust this chain depending on what I want to pull with the yoke? when the pole reaches down all the way towards a plow its angle is different to what it would be with may be a one-axle-cart….thus the chain needs adjusting? No, because it is always 90Β° ???

    lack of testosteron lets bones grow for a longer time, thus the increased size in comparison to uncastrated males; also responsible for a different muscle/fat ratio.

    @ Bivol:

    purebred boskarins have bule upper mouth

    ??Bule? Blue?
    Thanks for the explanations!
