ParticipantWent to visit Simon today it is actually his son Ernie who will train scarlet. We saw 6 of his horses not head shy at all and very calm even the Standardbread he pulled his buggy with. He took his big belgian stud out of the stall and his young son crawled up the pen swung over and droped on his back the horse didnt even flinch. None of the animals on his farm were the least bit concerned that we were walking around and definablely were not afraid of anyone. I’m glad I went and feel confident that they will not mistreat our horse. Also told us we can stop in any time and he will teach us anything we want to know. He said as soon as the weather warmed up he will call me. Eli

ParticipantI live in Wisconsin east of green bay we usually have snow on the ground from December untill March it will snow before or after but it melts.

ParticipantWe have been getting wet heavy snow all day about 6 inches. But it’s getting colder out. Hope fully it isn’t to bad. I was just talking to a friend today who wants me to weld up some finishing pans and some type of lid for a vacuum filler I weld stainless steel and make and fix things for some local syrup people from time to time. Anyway good luck and be safe. Eli

ParticipantCarl my mare was a brood mare for years and is very out of shape and so I didnt want to chance it or should I say my daughter didn’t want me to chance it. And my other mare is very green and so am I. So I figured it was best to hold off. This sommer I hope to get every body in shape to do a little work. Eli

ParticipantIf I could make a living farming like my Father did I would. But those days are gone like the corner store and full service gas station. Some survive by finding a niche market but most struggle. I see it every day and lived it for 20 years. I think we call this progress but I’m not sure why. I have no problem with a tribute to America’s farmers most worked extreamly hard to get where they are. Sorry Dodge I’m a Ford man ! Well if I can I drive a Morgan. God Bless America. Eli

ParticipantDog River if you go to the Equipment Fabrication section look at my Arch Before the Horse post I have some pictures of what I built It’s nothing fancy but I had all the steel and stuff laying around. I didn’t get to try it because one of my horses was pregnant, incidentally she had a filly last night. Eli

ParticipantGoat man the Amish I have talked to we’re always very nice and willing to talk. I have never had a horse trained but have bought harnesses and had wagon wheels fixed. If you have any Amish in the area stop in and ask questions they have always been helpful to me. Eli

ParticipantThanks I have high hopes I do plan on checking him out before I drop her off. He has a contact person I emailed her and hope to get some references? I have a neighbor who told me to build tie stalls for my team he told me to always stall them at night said it gets them used to standing patiently. I planed on cutting some trees and sawing some ash planks and building stalls this winter but we had to move the mill so now its in peices. Eli

ParticipantThank you for your reply. I talked to Simon and agreed to bring Scarlet in a few weeks when it warms up a little. I will stop and see him before to get a feel for his methods. From our phone conversation I think it will be a good thing. I don’t plan on making a living with her but I would like for her to earn her keep. A times I wanted to buy a broke team but already have 5 soon to be 6 horses. Scarlet is about 1300 lbs and should do anything I need her to. I have a smaller Morgan and another curly mare (very pregnant) to team her with. I am excited to use the horses around the farm and in the woods. Eli
