I planted it a few times and always put it in the silo. Good yeald but can be toxic to cows if cut to short or after a frost. I grows like crazy and can get hard to harvest I’ve hade some get away on me I grow to 10+ feet tall. I would think it would make good horse feed if the weather cooperates. Eli

I went and visited my horse at the trainer today she has been there two weeks and is doing great we drove her a few miles down the road big trucks cars no problems. I can’t believe how calm she is. Over the next two weeks he is going to team her up with the Belgian/halflinger cross and if all goes well I will bring her home to. I would recommend Ernie bontrager to any one he is doing an Awsome job with my Scarlet. Ernie’s 14 year old brother was disking with 7 abreast. Eli

Stopped at I&J mfg good thing I didn’t have the truck or I would have a mower and an angry wife. I asked her to tow one home with her Edge but she said no. Im home and farther behind then when I left, funny how that works, but I saw my son and daughter in law and they are doing great so life is good.    Eli

Found a few shops today and tomorrow we head to Pennsylvania hopefully to I&J mfg to see some of the equipment I dream about, and see more horse drawn farming. The only bad part is we are going home and I will not see my son for a wile.      Eli

That is what I thought most of my friends have full draft horses that match. I have a curly mare 15 hh 1200 lbs its hard to find two curlies that match. I may buy Scarlet’s sister same size different color but she is not trained and way pregnant. I just don’t need more horses even if I sell the foal it’s break even at best.  Thanks Eli

I brought my horse to am Amish man yesterday for some training. And they were plowing 4 abreast I watched for a few minutes but had a hoarse on the trailer for two hours already. He said when the horses are in shape and the plow is shined up they can use two but four is easyer on the horses. They use 1 14 inch plow in sod and 2 14 ‘s in corn stubble. Both tractor plows as he called them. They cropped 112 acres with 8 horses but train and sell some. In two weeks I am going back to see how it’s going and get some training.   Eli.

I finally brought scarlet to the Amish for training I hope all goes well.    They were finishing up plowing some sod with 4 Belgians on a 1 bottom plow  he said 2 can pull it once they are in shape. Super nice family I have high hopes.            Eli

It is important that all conditions are  favorable when we no till, low weed pressure, good fertility, warm ground. The crop needs to get growing as fast as possable. I agree a hybrid approach would be the best. Some weeds are best avoided even if you have to till or spray.    Eli

I think no till  can be part of an organic rotation but I would be hard to replace all tillage with no till. Ground covered with heavy residue warms slower in spring add takes longer to dry out so a cold wet spring like we are having in Wisconsin will make no till corn a challenge. I have planted wheat, oats, new seeding hay in spring with great success.   Eli

Weeds, manure and cold springs are the problems with no till. A digester only reduces manure by 30% at best  and most  digesters don’t make money. I miss a lot of things about dairying but manure management is not one ot them.

There has been talk on hear before about no till and I think some one said they had a no till drill at horse progress days. The only down side I ever had was manure it is hard to use manure with no till. And I was a dairy farmer with lots of manure to incorporate    Eli

I was supposed to send my horse to an Amish horse trainer to finish her training but she has a sore foot. She is six and never was lame or sick in any way, I’m kind of disappointed I feel like I have been waiting forever. All in time.              Eli
