ParticipantGood Morning all,
We are closing in on the date for the wood bee. I met with Jay at his property yesterday to look at the lay of the land. This is a great property with lots of potential for future events and a fantastic view of the Connecticut River Valley. There is plenty of room to park trailers and cars. It is about 2,000 feet from the log pile to the farm and some of it is a gradual uphill climb. The logs are stacked on a pretty steep slope so we are going to build a log deck below the current pile so we can access them a little safer.
If we split the working teams up, we can skid from the log deck to the pasture, then from the pasture to the farmhouse. We would like to get an idea who might be bringing their animals so we can get a better idea how much help we might have.
Those who do not bring animals are welcome to cut, split or move wood or just simply watch and help in the woods.
I am bringing Oz and a fore cart and log scoot. Jen is Bringing a team I think and Erika might be up with her steers.
This should be a great day.ED

ParticipantWow, that thing is wide. Nice work, it is a little easier than walking behind them all day 🙂
Look forward to hooking up with you on Friday.

ParticipantJay,
I think what you are looking at is the bed chain. Here is a link to a guy in PA that sells bed chains and links. Others may chime in with a local supplier. I think Agri supply also can get the chains.

ParticipantWe were very impressed with the heartiness of the birds. We raised about 55 red’s and processed them at the farm. They averaged about 5lbs after butchering with some over 6lbs and a few in the high 4lb range.
Very tasty over the winter. We are going to raise around 70 this year. We free ranged them in a tractor we built that measured 8′ x 16′. Never lost a bird to a predator but did loose several during the heat wave in late July.
We had a an initial capitol outlay for the electric netting, tractor materials and processing equipment, but will be much better prepared for this season.

I just checked, that is only a hour and a half straight up Rt91 for me, are oxen invited to come play too? I can bring my new go-devil and/or a scoot I just bought yesterday and have not tried out yet.
~TomTom,
We would love to have you. Oxen will be a nice addition.
We will have our local news 9 NH Chronicle there to do a piece for their TV show. It will give us great exposure and will help promote our mission.
Can’t wait to see everyone.

ParticipantGreat work, The ground looks a little soft still. The team looks like they are enjoying the work. Nothing more satisfying than working with a good team. If you need help with the welding let me know.

ParticipantOver grazing is my fault. I need to do a better job of rotating the horses about the pasture. When they graze it down to 1″ the weeds have little competition and try to take over. This is good soil and has been productive in the past. I think a little seed and some chain harrow will work it into the slots I have cut with the disc. Then I will use the electric fence and step in posts to rotate them areound and keep them from over grazing.
