ParticipantMike,
I think you are correct. After some investigating it looks just like the planet JR.
Thanks for the tip.

ParticipantThanks Mitch, I think you might be right. Also thanks for the tip on the book.
The adjustment you speak of on the end of the beam is for leveling the bottom of the furrow correct? This one has several notches in it and rotates the beam in a circulare motion.

ParticipantThanks for the tips. I like the string idea.
I picked up the cultivator for free, that was the best part. I went to buy hay and the guy had it sitting in the hay loft collecting dust. I asked how much he might want for it and he said, “I should pay you to take it so my wife will stop complaining about how I collect things.”:D
There is no brand name on it and looking at the metal work I would figure it is early 1900 or so. It is stamped steel and not hand forged.
I also scored a IH riding sulky plow that looks like it is ready to put to work.
As my collection of horse stuff grows I think to myself, 3 years ago I had horses for my daughter and viewed them as a chore. Horse shows, trailers, clothes, registration fees. None of it made sense to me.
Now I am doing the same things and buying impliments, go figure:p

ParticipantPulled my buckets yesterday, dumped maybe 25 gallons of yellow sap on the ground. I had not collected in 8 days.
We are done. Washing buckets and tubing when the weather cooperates.
This year was a definite disapointment. only made 57 gallons of our usual 120 gallon crop.
Can’t fight mother nature I guess.
Glad to hear others have done well.

ParticipantNice Job Don,
I thought maybe you had won the log trailer but I guess you just got the ribbon.:)
Regarding the obstacle course. I Helped at the Hopkinton State Fair when our local Granite State Draft Horse and Pony Association sponsored the event.
Evelyn and Francis Pike were in charge of the obstacle course. I think you know them from NEAPFD. They have the Mule teams and travel with Bob Chriton alot.
Maybe a call to her would give you some more ideas. They set up a course very similare to what you have explained above.
If you need contact info, let me know.

ParticipantThis weather is depressing? I gathered 160 gallons of sap from almost 500 taps today and that was two days of run!!!!!!!!!!!!
I finished boiling it in tonight and will finish and can it tommorow. We are just half of where we were last year and the forecast is not good for the next several days.
Going to pull the pans this wekend and clean and hope for better weather.
We still have 2 feet of snow on the ground so I am hoping it will improve enough for one more good run at least.
Hope things are better for all of you.

ParticipantHe is heading to a great new home with another Haffie and will be ridden by an experianced teenager. She came to the farm on Saturday and fell in love with him. My daughter is sad 🙁 but knows its best for him considering she will be off to college in August.

ParticipantIs the sap running as slow for all of you as it is here in SW NH?
I should be way ahead in terms of production from where I am now.

ParticipantThis is interesting discussion,
I have been tying my horse in the woods when running the chainsaw or taking a rest break. But he is fine when hitching, unhitching or rolling logs at the landing.
I honestly was doing it for my own piece of mind at first, however I began to think of all the bad things that could happen if he were to run off with the singletree in tow, and began to think tying was for the safety of both of us.
Regarding renewed energy, I was giving sleigh rides last weekend and on the third trip away from the sugar house, the team was dead slow. I was amazed that when we turned around they had so much energy and spunk to get back.
Glad to know they are not the only horses that do that.

ParticipantTapping soft or red maples will produce nice syrup. Most would not be able to tell the difference.
I do not tap them only because hard maple is available in our sugarbush. That said, if it was all I had access to I would not hesitate to tap them.
I had a great first week. We have made 24 gallons so far. The weather looks like it should be favorable for us, however our runs have been small and not very productive the last few days. Hope things improve soon.
I tend to hit the panic button and then two days later we can’t keep up with the runs? Just how sugaring goes.

ParticipantHe is such a handsom fella.

ParticipantGoerge,
I allready spread manure with Oz single.
I would like to do some mowing this summer and Jim, the owner of the black horse, picked up a nice number 7 and would like to use them for clipping his pasture.

ParticipantWe have hitched the horses together a couple more times and they continue to be very good together.
We rearanged the evener assembly and have the harness working the way it should.
Thanks for the help. Here are a couple of pics from yesterday at the sugar house where we were giving rides to visitors.
