Thanks for all the great information. In an effort to “get er done” yesterday, I did not set up the Liverpool bit with the curb chain. I ran it in the large ring and hitched the boys to disc the gardens. That was just what they needed. Steady work and a good pull.

They worked well and I was encouraged to see the pace slow and team working together. I am still going to get the curb chain set up and adjusted and give that a try. T

This is such a great forum with lots of good information, thanks to all who continue to contribute.

Thanks for the info, I am going to hitch them tomorrow and get some manure spread.

How much slack should there be on the curb chain under the chin?

Sorry to hear about your holding tank. There is always something to work on. At least you didn’t lose much sap.

We have had a couple of good runs last couple of days. Gathered about 800 gallons or so. Still way under what we should have. Hope it does not warm up to quickly this weekend.

    George,

Great looking video. Looks like nice wood. Do you find it a pain to switch between the d-ring shackle and hook for twitching wood then undoing the shackle to go back to the pin on the evener for forecart yarding?

I want to redo my evener so it has a welded hoop on the back so the d-ring and twitching hook can stay on the evener while yarding. Then I can just hook the evener onto to a welded hoon on the forecart tongue.

Horses are looking good. Nice grapple attachment too. Looks like a handt tool on the landing.

Well this season is starting to worry me. I am usually a pretty optimistic guy but think it is going to be a poor season. I have not gathered in 7 days. It has been to cold with no sap flow. Now the temps are up and still very little.

We are at about 10% of last years production and I have been taped for 4 weeks. It is a race against mother nature now in terms of weather. Too much warmth will seal the tap holes and bring it to an end.

    How is everyone else fairing?

    Tom,

I have had good success with this bit. Oz seems more comfortable with it and has settled into his job nicely. We did 16 sleigh rides last weekend for our maple open house and both horses did fine working together.

I have still not used the leverage positions and hook my lines to the ring.

Same here Mark, the best weekend we have ever had for Maple Weekend. Made 19 sleigh ride trips with the horses between yesterday and today. The horses were great and the snow conditions were just right for rides through the woods. Great neighbors and friends to help out in the sugar house. We had sap to boil as well. It was good to gather yesterday evening so we could boil today. We had visitors from all over NH thanks to the great job the NH Maple Producers Association did promoting the event.

Hope you all have sap to boil.

It is still a slow start here in Southwest NH. We have boiled twice so far and have finally drawn of a few batches. Too windy yesterday so we gathered little sap. But we wanted to empty the pails before the cold snap.

    How is everyone else doing?

We hung all our buckets yesterday and I finished the last of the tubing lots today. It was running well by afternoon. Now we just need the proper weather. This season is certainly off to an odd start.

Looks like a couple of promising days early this week, then snow and cold again for the end of the week. At least the sun is high and warm this time of year.

My sled does not have a reach between the two. Would a semi slack chain work? Connected to the center of the front bob and then to the rear roll?

It seems as though there might be more room than with a stiff reach arrangement.

Great thoughts Mark, I agree that some producers loose sight of the forest through the trees. How large does a producer need to be?

We basically pay our property taxes with the revenue generated from our sales. If we are lucky, we can invest in a new piece of equipment or set aside money to buy containers for the next year.

Since my children have grown up and moved on, I look at the new technology as a means to reduce my labor and time investment. I really do not wish to make more syrup but dream of making the same amount with less wood burned and labor involved. The balance is achieving that goal in a manner that does not require debt.
