    An easy way to find a cant for an ox yoke is to contact a tree service and have him save you a nice chunk. You can rough it out with a chain saw.
    If you want the best hard wood have him get you a Norway Maple the best light wood is a Sassafras.

    Frank is not trained to do what you tell him but to do what the other steer tells him. Put him in a single yoke and put him to work.
    It is no problem to put different cattle together if they are both trained to respond to the driver.

    Mine are 7 year old Devons. They get no grain, I feed them free choice grass hay. They get a big round bale about every 2 weeks. There are supposed to be 20 square bales in one round bale.

    Some of them are still useing sawdust but they are changing to foam insulated buildings. It is a lot cleaner and easier. It seems to keep better too. The ice this year was real nice 9 to 10 inches thick. They cut with a motor powered circular saw and haul it with horse drawn sleds. They are careful to cut the blocks even so they pile in tite so there is no air space between them. Some of the new houses have a small compartment in them that they use for a refridgerator.

    I built the hay rack, Grabers built the bale mover, and the steers furnish the power. The group does great and there is very little waste. Hay or energy.

    If I had to cut my wood by hand I am sure I could heat my house and water on half of what it takes now. If we had to turn a crank to generate our electricity we would not be wasting it.

    It works very well and if done with a little planing it can make a beautiful yoke.;;

    I have a fore cart for my cattle, but is one that I built. Cost about $100.

    I grew up with a bitch link having two eyes so you used it to fasten two chains together. The link that you are talking about we called a chain harp.
    I use a 10 foot chain with a grab hook in one end and a harp in the other. There is also a harp along with a ring in the yoke. In the woods I prefer a pole about eight feet long with a harp on the end.

    I think it would be better to just buy a trained pair and save the hassel. If I train them for you I would want to train you to.
