ParticipantIf you go to the Sampson harness site, they show all the different harnesses. Tell them by name and you can see all the straps labeled. Great refference page.

ParticipantYou could buy a mid size loader tractor, then have it for the loader…and when you need to bale that hay ahead of the rain…In farming, the only thing that has to be done now ,,is make hay. The plowen, planten,,and corn picken can wait a while if need be.

ParticipantAre you just plowing two acers ? Walking plow would be easier to pull and if your skill level is in need of improvement, someone could always drive while the other handled the plow. Then you could trade off so both can learn the art of a walking plow.

ParticipantIf the team is in shape, things will go Ok on the flat. Do you have breaks on your fore cart ? If your ground has any hills you will need to bale around and not up and down.
On a baler I used once, at a certian speed the plunger would lunge with more force. I don’t know why, just did. Set the speed up just alittle and it ran smooth, never seen any movement in the toung after that. Must of been something about the fly wheel speed.

ParticipantI knew a guy who had a single mower for sale,,,i think in the 650 range. but hes had it a good while, so might deal…you could remove the shafts and fix a pole to hitch two..now you have a easy pulling mower that to light horses can handle…I think if I remember it cut 4ft.
If you are in need and interested, I will try to find the contact info I have hidden in my computor!j.l.holt

Hi, I’m looking for a single horse mower ready to use. Prefer one that is easy to find parts for.
Thanks
Did you ever find a single horse mower, or did you solve that problem ?

ParticipantI read all the posts about logging and being careful not to skin up the trees left behind. Here is something that has worked for me a couple of times.. If I need to make a cornner that will chance rubbing a tree that I don’t want rubbed, and moveing he trail will not help. I have been known to plant a good fence post, just to be used to corrner up the logs as they make the cornner. That way the trees are not skinned. You can just leave them standing, might use them again before they rot off.

ParticipantWe used a spredder like you describe in the woods before we had good welded double tree/single tree set ups. Chain was always easy to get and the stick could be cut anywhere needed.
The last one I used was used for butchering a beef.

ParticipantHang that in the shed and get a piece about 2in shorter that the double tree. Use a breast chain and slide snap, hooked about 6in in front of the collar. It will slide just out of squair with the front of the horse. Now hook your trace chains just snug enough to lift the double tree up. Try that and see what happens. let us know.

ParticipantI had a mule one time like that. Pull anything you hooked her to. If it was to much, I’ev seen her on her knees grabbing at brush with her teeth, trying to get leverage to move it. If you led her….I almost had to cross tie her to hook up. Would spin around to face me. So I hooked while she was turning, pull the traces up between her legs and hook with her looking over my shoulder. when we turned around, she would get untangled.
I ask the guy I bought here from about it and he said ”we never had any trouble with her,,led her for years in the garden. never stepped on anything” Leading was all she knew !!!!j.l.holt
ParticipantThe one thing he will learn while you lead him, is the fact that he can pull the logs. He will think he can pull the world. Good for thast kind of mind building, but don’t want to go to the point he thinks thats the only way its done.

ParticipantAre you useing a chain spreader or some sort?

ParticipantHeck no !!! We was in heaven when we got the first big pony. We would even help him when we were out of sight of the house. Did not want anyone to say it was to much for him. They would make us stop and go back to carrieing it our selves.
We put anything we needed to move on them,,even our selves !February 15, 2013 at 11:45 am in reply to: A different kind of insulated water tank: 275 gallons, 42 watts #76409j.l.holt
ParticipantI don’t see you being happy with solar power, trying to heat your water. You use so much power that the panel could not recharge in one day. You would have a dead battery in two days. The heater works on a dead short system. This takes a lot of power. Any way you look at it,the power company can produce power cheaper than we can. If you have any way to plug in, do it, if not, move the tank so you can.

ParticipantEli. These people who are ”getting after” their horses with a buggy whip might be at a different level of trainning than you. You say your horse will do all of these things, just what is it that she is not doing ? She might be telling you shes ready to move to the next step. If you feel she is haveing trouble with the cart becasuse it so light, tie a couple tires behind. as she settles down cut one loose. Then the next when she is going good. If its just the idea of the shafts touching her, hook up and tie to the hitch rail as you would to teach standing tied or wearing the harness. After touching and smelling this for a couple hours it will be a no issue. repeat every chance you get. You will get to a point that you forget why you are doing this.
A horse is a animal of repition, good and bad is remembered. good luck.- AuthorPosts
