I have this spreader in the small size. I bought it thinking I would use my horse to pull it. That was before I found out my horse will not pull anything.

I can get about 3 days of manure in it before spreading with 3 big horses and 2 minis.

There is no reason it could not be pulled with a forecart. It hitches to the tractor very easily.

My dream is one day closer. ground drove my percheron tonight. She was a 7 out of 10. Not bad, but she knows better. Tomorrow, we will tug on the tuggs.

If we don’t have dreams, what do we have.

I thought about using my min pin to take care of my rat problem, but was afraid the rats would be too big for her. She is great at killing mice and moles. She is 9 lbs, not much smaller then your JRT. If I get another bunch of rats I will put her out there. She would have a blast killing them. She is a runner however, it would be difficult keeping her just in the barn.

    Hi Micheal,

Come to the draft horse auction in New Haven on May 3rd. Rt 17 off Rt 7.

    Wow, thanks everybody.

The first thing I am going to try is tightening the lugs on the ground rod. I had my first solar fencer up for 3 years and it worked great. Someone told me that I need a eight foot ground pole, so I pulled out my short 4 foot ground pole and the fence has never worked the same. I replaced the fencer and added another 8 foot ground pole. Exactly the same low current. I tried to find my old 4 foot ground pole, but being so small it is hard to find. It could be as simple as me not putting the lug on right when I switched poles.

In the winter the only time I would get any power to the lines was if I poured water onto the ground poles. I did not get any more power then, then I do now.

Having this problem is making it very tempting to have the power company run a line from the power pole to the barn. However, I know that I would not stop at a electric fence. The next thing you know I would have real lights, that stay on more then 90 minutes and running hot water. Heck why stop there, I might as well get a flush toilet!

Jen, I am with you. I have a horse now that could pull a single horse cultivator, but since I don’t really even know what one looks like, it is hard to think about doing it.

I do have a single horse manure spreader that will be hitched to the forecart as soon as the ground is solid enough to get across it. Hopefully I can get some help here for my first time out with it. Not sure how much farm work this guy has done. He sure is good with just the forecart.

The women we bought one of our minis from in Charlotte VT mows their lawn with their minis. I don’t think they need the power of the 8 horse hitch, but I sure would love to see it happen.

    Hi Jennifer,

Good to see some more minis on the site. I have 2 also. A 6 year old mare we trained to drive last year and a 1 year old colt who will be ponied with the mare this year. A lot of fun to be around.

I just brought home a new driving horse, he has taught me a lot. Stick around this forum and you will always learn something new.

I was reading on another forum about a horse/pig encounter and it did not end at all like yours. It was only 1horse and 1 pig. They became friends.

It is good to know that horses will attack something strange in their field. We have a bobcat that cuts through our property and I have been nervous about our minis. I have been telling the family not to worry that Bess would take on a bobcat if she needed to. Now I have some information to back up that statement.

When are you thinking of doing this? I would love to come watch. Not sure how far away you are, but I am always up for a drive.

I will be of no help to you as far as the plowing, or driving goes, but I can throw out encouragement and even bring a pie.

Hi, I have an idea I would like to put out there for your reactions.

I have been talking to some members of a very active draft horse club in CT and one of the fun things they do as a club is to plow a community garden with horses. The town that they work with turns this into a fun all day event. The garden is large enough for 100 families to have a plot in it. Last year they sold all the plots in that one day.

The club only uses experienced teamsters to do the plowing, because there are lots of eyes watching and they want the work to look pleasing not only once it is done, but while the ground is being worked.

I would like to find a town in Vermont that would welcome a group of teamsters to come and plow their garden space, make a day of it and open the eyes to a few more people about how great life can be with draft horses.

Anybody here have any thoughts on this idea?

Ok, I have a brochure in front of me titled “The Canadian Horse” However the website is http://www.lechevalcanadien.ca

I guess in English it is Canadian and in French in Canadien.

I think it depends on what you are going to do with the horse. For me, I am happy to call my guy a chunk, but if I was going to show him, I might be more inclined to go with Canadian.

I don’t want him to get to big of an ego. He will be a simple farm horse for me and he needs to know that.

I saw Andy at the Driving Forum in West Springfield, MA last weekend. He started driving with drafts, now focuses on lighter breeds, but does do training. He is pretty close to you, it might be worth contacting him.

I also believe they are a breed of their own. I can not tell my chunk from my percheron until I get up close to them. He is smaller, especially his head. He is an incredibly smart horse and so far pretty solid as far as bombproof. Of course he had one of the best trainers in the area teach him.
