Carl thanks for the pics. Those look like shop built rather than commercial clevis’ connecting the single trees to the evener.
Tim, Can you elaborate on the transfer of forces you observe?
Mitch, Although I must admit trying a buck back and finding it annoyingly awkward (maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance) In this case, as you indicated, I’m not feeling like I’m trying to hold a horse back. Although my younger horse is somewhat less “steady”, he will sometimes forge ahead and sometimes hang back, especially in the first hour, when they are working along good the younger one gets out of wind quicker. That is what I am using to measure how to “divide” the load. I figure that, ideally, their respiration rate should about match. I may be in error here
That said it sounds like your buck back system may be simpler than some I have seen. Do you go straight from the halter to the inside heel chain with a single line? Or?
J-L, sounds like a simple, fairly light weight design. A picture would be great if you get to it.

    Thanks all.

Jim I don’t have an answer but I sympathize.
The bedding (shavings) in my straight stalls ends up behind my 2 younger (4&5) horses from pawing I guess. Even when I bed them last at 9-10, they still end up lying on a wet floor. I have contemplated putting a curb on the back of the stall to keep the bedding in. Anyone tried that? I’m hoping that as time goes on they will stand all night.

I am fortunate that my older (9) horse not only has quit lying down in his stall but he will stretch back on his chain so his hind feet are on the back side of the gutter and actually urinate directly into the gutter! Keeps his belly clean & dry.

I use straight stalls because of space and manure management.

    Hi Donn,
I’m having trouble picturing your set up. I’m thinking that with three, only 2 are hitched to the neck yoke, either side of the pole, w the third pulling only, no backing. Is that the setup you have?
Or are all 3 “neck yoked” some how?
With a team, the weight of the neck yoke would not make the tongue hang too low (with a D ring), it would only increase the weight on the horses backs.
    Just curious.
    Still waiting for snow here.

Don’t know where Donn got them but they are available at:
    http://www.meadersupply.com/Publish/catalogs/tack_catalog/Tack-Catalog.pdf
    p.67 $3.50 apiece. 1 1/2 or 2 “.
    Donn,
I do most of my driving on a pole & leave the trace carriers (“Lazy straps”) off. Less “stuff”. Only put them on when working a single or loose hitch.
Will be good to see slack in those neck yoke straps when you get a team set up going. Get that tongue weight onto the backs.

Well, this may be marginal but Jay’s song put me in mind of “Breakfast in Hell” by Slaid Cleaves:

    Carl,
Funny I was just thinking about those yard lights for trail side the other day. Could be cool if those things actually work. I can already think of several good locations. Anyone have any experience with them?
    Karl,
The flashlight would be down & dirty, low capital outlay, use with re-chargeable batteries… Might be the way to go.
    Andy & Geoff,
Do you suppose I would have to drive wearing a white Travolta suit if I used the strobes?

Talk about Equipment Innovation! Looks great.
It you are so inclined, a series of right angle photos showing plan and side, front and rear elevations, possibly in both operating & dumping modes would be great. As well as any pertinent spec info like stock size of steel used for different parts and some dimensioning. I know this is asking a lot, no pressure, just thinking out loud.
This rig looks especially well suited to driveways that are hemmed-in so that snow cannot be pushed to the side over & over. Thinking about that, what is your overall dumping strategy, as far as laying out an area to stock pile snow?

Thanks all for the replies. Any photos would be great as always. Karl my email is mark@raggedviewfarm.com

I guess I will go w the 4″ round in the pipe, either incandescent or LED. The pipe under the pole should work well with a plug type neck yoke. It is the quality of the light of LEDs (outlaw blue headlights!) that i dislike but the low draw is probably good. May add an inverter & Christmas lights if it ever gets to the top of the list! Is there anything to know about deep cycle batteries, or is one as good as another?
    Thanks,

That is a cool film. Ben Thresher is also in “The Last Yankees, Folkways in Eastern Vermont and the Border Country” by Scott E. Hastings, Jr., University Press of New England, 1990.

I bet I use that trick of using two kerfs clamped together to get half of a straight bore someday.

Instructional as well as being as great read by a great guy.

Coupled with the Comcast glitch of last evening it serves as a good reminder that as valuable as this online community is, we are way, way out on a limb taking the digital world for granted. Neglect your analog community at your own peril!

    Carl,
Your painting story reminds me of “The Herring Net” by Winslow Homer.

I have some large (1.9MB) attachments that are using space that prevents me from uploading new images.

    1. How can I delete them?
    2. If I delete them, I assume that they will no longer be available in the thread they were posted in. True? Is there a better way to deal with this?

I have figured out how to make my photos smaller by using Picassa’s “export” feature as suggested. Still need to get some room for them.
    Thanks,
    Mark
