Not silviculture-related but shows how screwed up energy usage is – we visited that coal powered cog rail line at the base of Mt Washington in New Hampshire. I was talking to the engineer there and he told me they get their coal shipped to them from South America – I think Argentina. What? I’m not a geographer but I’m pretty sure Argentina is farther away than W. Virginia or even Wyoming and I’m also pretty sure their coal burns just like ours.

Sorry if I’m asking the questions of a simpleton but I’d like to know how one calculates “cost” of said job. Is it only expendables (fuel, oil, chain etc) plus time? Or do you factor in stuff like depreciation/wear & tear/replacement of equipment (pick up, horses etc)? Just wondering because I struggle to figure out what it really costs me to perform a job – ag or in the woods.

I’d be interested to hear what you all do. It always seems like I undervalue what I’m doing.

So what’s your take on the site?
They do have some pretty good photos of various areas.

The tar sands fight has been going on here for a while but IMO the David and Goliath analogy is even too weak to demonstrate the difference in money to be thrown at this. More like a flea on David’s back vs an army of Goliaths.

Funny there was an article in Aububon addressing the “new” corporate environmental awareness – but I’m not seeing it.

And the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) seems reminiscent of the tobacco industry’s marketing back in the day. Tell the public “it’s all good.” enough times and they’ll believe it.

    Very simply….. they’re horses!!

Yep – one of mine pulled some antics the other day. I was laying in some drain tile to keep it from getting too swampy near their gate. I had just pulled one of those “sock things” over the tile and was going to get the tractor and backfill the trench. It was only 50 feet away! As I was hopping up in the seat I saw Red had gotten ahold of the sock at one end of the tile and was lifting the tile up 4 or 5 feet in the air! I had to holler to stop! And he dropped it and looked at me like “Oh. That’s not for me?”

    Dang him.

Have you thought about some type of “working agreement” with the landowner (assuming you’re buying existing farm ground)?

We do same vaccines – once added West Nile virus one but not anymore. I think John might have hit on it with slowing down food intake. She might be wolfing food down and inadvertently aspirated some into her windpipe.

Check out Yaz All Crop for sure. For example, he has all the scour kleen screen sizes for various crops (not the actual screens but the charts) etc.

Damn you Donn! I’ve been trying to find a decent All Crop within 2 days drive of me and not having much luck. How did you transport it? If you trailer it, they’re oversize loads – if you break ’em down it’s a bit of work ….. unless of course you were lucky enough to find one nearby and towed it.

Google “Yaz All Crop” – should take you to the guru of All Crops who has some good info, adjustments and pics (also parts). Those boogers were supposed to handle everything from alfalfa seed to corn, hence All Crop. But you won’t get 58T of wheat per hour : ) Is it a PTO drive or have a separate motor on it? Out here the motors often got removed and used in the old Cletrac crawlers.

I tried resetting Carl’s title and privileges before I saw your message Jen. We’ll have to see if it even worked – although I do notice his “title” is now Senior Member and he has the privileges of a Registered User – so he might not see your message.

BTW – I see Andy Rooney will soon be available since Ed’s not working out so well! : (

From what I can tell, I don’t have the authority to remove your Admin status. I think Jen already changed the e-mails but I should check the permissions to make that change – we shouldn’t be able to read this BOD thread.

I’ve seen where the box sits on the bolsters w/ the pins outside the framework of the box – your box size might not allow this. Also, they had a block anchored to the bottom of the sled that would fit right in front of the front bolster and one behind the back one. If your bolsters are free to pivot then you should be alright IMO.

    Erik –

I have to reply with my common reponse – my time is about the only thing I truly own that doesn’t wear out or depreciate until I do.

The advantage of electricity is in its storage as power for use at a later time. For example – posting on here.
