ParticipantAndy –
I got in the habit of saying “whoa” to a lot of things – more like a “whoa Nelly”. Trying to break that ’cause sometimes it’s when I’m doing other stuff with my horses – lucky I don’t have Nelly.

ParticipantHi Ethan,
So Stamets is selling petro bar oil w/ spores in it or some other veg oil w/ spores? He is the “mushroom” guru so if he says the oyster shroom will degrade std bar oil, I’d tend to believe him. The question seems to be what is it in bar oil that gives it tackiness – I’m pretty sure it’s not just viscosity as similar wgt motor oils don’t stick as good either. Once they canget a product that performs and costs close to that of std bar oil, then you might see more people on board. Keep us posted with your results.

ParticipantHi Ed,
Did you try posting them here on DAP in a gallery? That might be another option. How many pics do you want to download?

ParticipantHi Tom –
I didn’t even know there was a mite that made horns flaky but could believe that a systemic product like maybe ivermectin could work. I’d like to hear more about it.

ParticipantRemember that video link on here somewhere showing that guy making a bobsled (seemed he was at an old mill in Maine/VT maybe). He made his shoe bolts out of carriage bolts I thought – heated and reshaped/flattened the head as I recall? Awesome.
Worth a look Brad if you haven’t seen it.

ParticipantHi Wes,
Glad you seem to be “on the mend”. What makes you a cowboy isn’t that you don’t get “thrown” once in awhile; it’s how long you stay down. Not long for you tough hombres!
We’ve had a goofy Sept here. Hotter than blazes (over 90) for at least a week and drier than a popcorn fart. Then, within 24 hrs, high is 59. Still no rain but we’re starting to hear some elk ….
The real sign of fall is how rushed the humans seem! (me included). Everyone starts to scramble to finish those projects that got put off all summer …… happens every year.

ParticipantHi Tony,
Welcome! A few years back () I too stumbled in here after “googling” the term “ground manners”. Loaded with great people, knowledge and experience just a mouse click away. If you’re close enough, try attending one of the gatherings/events. You won’t be disappointed.
I won’t embarrass another member by naming them but their spouse said “he’s found his people!” Amen to that.
Glad you found us and again, welcome!

ParticipantSo the MINIs have to be the pic for February for obvious reasons!

ParticipantIs that a binder holding the chain/log tight to the go-devil?
Also, I imagine the high hitch attachment point on the go-devil is to allow it to pitch forward abit and lift the nose of the log some. That’ll test the moxie of the steel frame.

ParticipantNo worries Scott! I’ll look through here again and see if parsing out some posts into another thread would be possible and still maintain the continuity of thought. If not, I can just add to the thread title to reflect the diversity within.
IMO – sometimes we get off in different directions within a thread and, while that can be frustrating to relocate sometimes – we are way better off as a group to have the comments or discussion presented, wherever! Isn’t that what we’re all about? So again – no problem Scott or anyone else. The forum IS about presenting ideas, thoughts, opinions and providing support and assistance to those who might need it.

ParticipantI think we are having 2 distinct and equally valuable discussions within this thread and I’m not sure how or if I can separate each into its own thread.
Do you think we might be suffering from the lack of reaching a critical mass w/ regard to sustainable logging and forest management/planning? Kind of like an action potential in physiology – you have to reach a certain threshold after which things proceed w/o added input. So how do we reach that threshold? I do understand that Jason, Carl and others are working diligently at presenting and promoting this practice – anything else we can do?

ParticipantYes – I haven’t signed yet either. Where’s the Post Master General’s phone number?! :{

ParticipantThere’s a lot more going on than just the govt throwing money at folks. For many, not necessarily Carl’s recent client, timber mgmt is more timber harvest to pay my property taxes, fund my vacation, buy my new pickup/4wheeler/snowmachine AND ends up a show me the money now proposal. Out here it is the rare individual who wants any longer term stand mgmt – it’s cut it all down now. it will eventually grow back in someone else’s lifetime. Plus, many feel like they’re doing something for their friends and neighbors who run those skitters and feller-bunchers by providing work.
So my point is, the govt programs (WHIP, HIP, FIP and EQUIP etc) are financial incentives to draw folks toward various alternative mgmt ideas. Sure- I see it get abused and utilized by LO who could afford to pay the whole cost out of pocket but the point was to change the practice.
Lastly, if you don’t think those larger commercial logging businesses have the ear of the Forest Service, Dept of Lands, BLM …. you’re kidding yourself. They carry a lot of clout around here.
