A donkey can outrun a horse and they do run fast. The like to romp and play and will walk, trot or canter and I guess gallop.

    Hi Geoff

That’s my wheel in the picture and it’s the same one I use on the three wheel forecart as well as other equipment.

I have both donkeys and Halfingers and there is no comparison in what they can pull. Donkeys are very limited in what the can do.

What I have come up with for attachment is to connect the bottom of the yoke to the calf halter side ring and the top to the horns. this should work to keep it in place untill the horns get big enough to fasten to in a regular manner.

Check out this site for a good discussion of donkey harnessing. http://www.atnesa.org/donkeys/Donkeys2-Dibbits-Donkeycarts.pdf

Those are the same donkeys but different harnesses. Those were pony harnesses which I no longer have. The new pictures are of VERY sturdy “D” ring harnesses. They were custom made by a harness maker (since retired) for Sam and Blue. The harness material is nylon, not that heavy in weight but strong, has collars and would pull anything that a donkey was capable of pulling. It’s easy to put on and when properly adjusted takes the pole weight off the donkeys neck which helps a lot with these smaller animals.

I think they have a Donkey cart design, read that article over, seems like they talked about using it or a similar one for Donkeys.

I will need your mailing address and I will send you a paper copy of the plans. You can e-mail it to me at rod@dayspringfarm.com

Here is the prototype I put together to see how it worked before I build a nicer one. The forehead fit is perfect and it rests nicely against the forehead when I hold it on my steer calf. But I realized after re-reviewing the photo on this thread that full horns are necessary. Not for attaching the yoke as my steer has stubs enough to do that but to keep it from turning up when the straps are tightened. The yoke is held in place by the forward pull of the straps AND the upward trap the horns form when it’s tightened.

this should work when the steers horns grow out but not now unless someone has another idea about this attachment problem.

    Hi Howie
You read my mind on that one. The way I set the cart up is pretty much the same as the drawing except for the shafts. Instead I am welding in two 2″ recievers one at the axel level and the other 6″ above it. These will recieve either the removable pole or the shafts which I already have for my WH forecart. This will also allow the cart to be towed behind a tractor or forecart with a short connecting shaft from the lower reciever. In addition their will be two more recievers welded vertically at the front (up at 12 sideboard height) top of the cart to recieve the seat from the same forecart which just drops in.
The axel will be attached with shackle bolts so I can move it back and forth to balance the cart.
With the 12″ side boards on the capacity of this cart is 33 cf.
I have a plan I drew up if anybody wants one. I will have to mail it because it’s in Autocad format.

Try this site http://www.atnesa.org/challenges/challenges-joubert-cart.pdf . I am building one to this plan (modified somewhat) and will post photos when it’s complete.

I have a very friendly steer calf, 9 months old but when he is on lead or in training he is very willfull and stuborn. Loves people and attention but not so crazy about training and work. The two in his case do not equate. Myself I would prefer a little more compliant steer even if he wasen’t as affectionate.

The one I have (since been turned into a wood cart) was very stable. It was an exact duplicate of the one in Millers book. The big thing with them is to not use in the woods or where there are potholes, stumps etc , things where the small front wheel can get hung up and flip you over the handle bars (which on that cart do not exist.)
