ParticipantI stop then back them up untill the harnes is tight and wrap the lines to whatever I’m hitched to. That way if they step ahead, they have to pull the equipment with their mouth.

ParticipantThe amish fellow where my friends horse is charges $10 per day for the days he works them. At least an hour a day. Be nice if you could find someone like him or an amish that would take him for the summer and use him for things like raking hay. Good luck with her!!

ParticipantGlad to hear about the luck you are having with your horse.
Marshall, you sure can’t beat those amish for breaking a horse to drive can you? Here is a 4 year old imported Haflinger stud after 10 days of my amish friend’s training. 5 days double and 5 days single. Me driving of course as he couldn’t do pictures.

ParticipantHere is another way. Back this over the log and lift it up. Then go back over another one and lift it too. These are my Haflinger mares pulling the load when they were staying at my amish friend’s place a few years ago.

ParticipantI think it is part of the elm family. Has a tight bark. There is a reason it is called ironwood. I cut some up in lenghts and let them set in the woods a year or two. One day I got a few to buils a deer stand. Tried to drive a spike into one and it went in 1/2 inch and bent right over. I chunked up those logs I dragged out yesterday this morning. If I would wait till next year the saw just bounces on it trying to get through it.

ParticipantOh, now I get it. Saw out some tongues. I don’t know how ironwood would work? It is very heavy wood and would make a very heavy tongue. I will ask my Amish friends if they ever use it. I have enough for a lot of them!!!
