ParticipantIf you decide on a shaft, which I like, here is a picture of how mine is set up.

ParticipantSounds interesting, I’ll try it.

ParticipantI have mine shoed with drilltec. Just bought a couple sets this week. Had about 3 years and about 4-500 miles on them. Came to about $21 a set for 1’s and 2’s. Use them on my Haflingers. Use the shoes on the road not so much for hoof wear as safety. We do have alot of gravel roads around here and that will wear them if barefoot in a hurry. If you are going at a road trot barefoot, they can slip and fall.
My amish farrier charges me $20 per horse. They stay on.

ParticipantMy amish harness maker got in some new lines with little “nubbies”. The lines and nubbies feel sort of rubbery. Cost about $20 to replace the rear 10 feet or so of the old lines. I really like them, easy to creep forward and back with them. Check with your local harness maker maybe they have some.

ParticipantI use nylon harness so I don’t have to worry about it.

ParticipantRemember – it’s not a runaway unless you try to stop them!!:)

ParticipantI fell of off my work sled once but I hollared whoa and they stopped. Was riding with my wife and there wasn’t room for both our buts on the straw bale.

ParticipantMost amish keep their harness in the dairy barn. As long as you have it oiled I wouldn’t think it would be a problem. Are you getting mildew on it?
Rod44
ParticipantPretty beefy sled! Wouldn’t pull that with a team of shetlands. Looks like yours could sure handle it though.:)

ParticipantYes, height of the britching is very important too. There was quite an extensive post on that awhile back, complete with pictures. Maybe one of those posters could tell you which one it was or repost the pictures for you. I would error on the side of a little high than too low.

ParticipantYou want the tugs tight enough that the ring can’t come off. I put a safety strap around the ring of the neck yoke and pole just to make sure it won’t come off. On my forecart it is bolted to the pole. You want it fairly tight to the neck yoke and britching so the weight isn’t slamming back and forth into them.

ParticipantGot one bobchain done. It worked OK going under the bob and coming out again (hooked it to the tractor). Will get the other one done tomorrow. Need somemore rope. Will take a picture when my wife comes home with the camera.
We got a good foot of snow our of the last big storm and will be going out in it tomorrow morning with the bobsled. A couple other old guys from our coffee cluch are coming up after coffee in the morning for a ride.
