ParticipantI’ll add my two cents as far as the leather vs. bio/ nylon discussion goes.
I have both a bio harness I use and a leather harness. My personal preference is to have a nylon harness for doing the around farm work and day to day chores. Then I love my heavy brass studded leather harness for events (ie. my stepping out harness). Leather’s great but man after a day of throwing up on and pulling off of those horses I never want to see it again. Unlike Carl I can’t slide it off my shoulder onto their backs since our “shorty” is 17.2.
I can’t add anything to the other (original) point of this thread since I don’t own a D-ring and I do all my harness parts shopping at my local harness shop. 🙂

ParticipantDon’t worry Scott, I’m sure like everything else, your body will adjust just fine.
Take above advice with a grain of salt since it comes from a 27 year old who wears single vision glasses. 😀

ParticipantGreat pics Grey. Kinda gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside don’t it?

ParticipantGot Dottie out today. I only had an hour or so before I had to go back to work but I thought I’d see what was gonna happen. And guess what did…..
Nothing. She worked like a million bucks. Gosh darned good old minded mare. She worked for an hour or so like she’d been doing great her whole life. I even had some friends walk up from behind her along that side, nothing. Had a friend walk my dog up from behind her on that side, nothing. Even had one frien run past her like a jogger,NOTHING. I even had one friend talk loudly while running past her from behind. NOTHING!!!! God I love my horse.
I’m not ready to take her back down there yet (she’s probably more ready than I am). I still want another solid week of hooking her up and making sure she’s coping.
I tell everyone I see that aparently I was a helluva person in another life to deserve such a good minded horse!

ParticipantThanks for the encouragement everyone. I didn’t get a chance to work with her today since I had to go back to the tree farm for day three (went without incident thankfully).
Tomorrow I’m going to start back at square one. Working her solo on the stoneboat around the house. Tuesday I’ll hook her back up with Queen for a stone boat ride around the pasture. Wednesday we’ll be back out on the forecart. All of this is depending on how she does the day before. We’re gonna take it slow and rebuild the focus and trust. She’s an awesome girl and I’m sure I can help her out of her funk.
I forgot to add some info to my original post.
The dog never broke skin so thankfully there was no physical injury to deal with. Although I think the physical injuries are easier to treat.
Luckily (or otherwise) I don’t know that she associated the dog witht he pain. She didn’t freak out when we passed a couple more dogs onb the way back around it was noise in general from the right rear. I’ve recruited some friends to station around my field to walk past her while she’s hooked to show her there’s nothing to fear. Additionally the owner of the farm volunteered his time and his employees time to restaff the farm on a day it’s closed so I can take her around the same loop and recreate the scenario to help her past her fear.
Lotsa work ahead but my girl’s worth it.

ParticipantWell, I’m not under 25 but I’m pretty young. 27. Been around the horses my entire life. Had to be young and dumb for a few ywars but came back to my simpler roots. Bought my first horse as a 2 y/o in 2006. Never looked back!

ParticipantI thought you guys might like my idea of the future. There would have to be alot of changes in the way the world works to realize the dream, but, you’ve gotta start somewhere.

ParticipantFinally got the videos to upload from that day. Enjoy!

ParticipantThe large wheel is fixed. The small wheel turns but only with an adjustment lever and the rear wheel is steered by the tongue. About twice a year we pull all the wheels off and repack them with grease. It’s funny, if you look at Pioneer’s “NEW” footlift plow and this old John Deere (from the pictures since I’ve never seen one up close) looks almost bolt for bolt the same! lol

ParticipantYou can adjust the eveners left or right to “supposedly” adjust how far in or out you plow. This plow just doesn’t seem to want to plow the way it’s adjusted. I’m putting wider eveners on it and that will push it in a little bit but the thing runs cock-eyed all the time. Not the worlds greatest design. I wish I had the money to get a new White Horse sulky.

ParticipantNice looking horses Gordon. Looks like fun!

ParticipantOur last plow is one that we borrowed from a friend when grandpa’s plow broke the first time. It’s a John Deere 200 (?) footlift with a 14″ bottom. Nice plow but it’s a little tipsy. Grandpa has a hard time running the lift. His knees don’t bend very well. Plows pretty narrow too. If anyone has any experience adjusting these lemme know!

ParticipantSecond plow is grandpa’s old walking plow. 14″ bottom. Oliver 99 I believe. Needs longer handles since I’m just about walking on my knees to hold on. I love this thing but I need to work with my horses more to keep the left hand horse from crowding my filly out of the furrow. My favorite.
