Plow number one is grandpa’s old John Deere. Bought new by his dad some 70 odd years ago. 16″ bottom with a plastic moldboard. Currently inoperable due to a missing key holding the lift to the handle. This one is grandpa’s favorite.

I found Oliver stamped on the back of the moldboard and R99 on the frame. What’s the part in the last pic called? It’s on the front of the point partially hidden behind the jointer.

The field I’m in will be oats next year seeded with alfalfa for a new hay field. We also do soybeans, corn and wheat depending on what field we’re in. Most of our ground gets worked by tractor but we do as much as we can with the horses, mainly for fun. I’m working on getting our old horse drawn cultivator fixed up this winter for our garden. Might even get the old disk fixed for field prep.

Our pads are mainly for the horses comfort. We use the old school cloth pads. They last 4 years or so and the collars themselves usually last 15 or so depending on what we’re doing.

Remind us; how long as “Speedy” been in harness?

She’s been working in harness for 12 YEARS!!! lol Now you see why I get so mad at her. She knows better. I switched her bit back over to the straight bar with a slow twist from the leverage bit and that helped alot but she’s not fond of my 5 y/o she’s hooked with. I’ve chaulked it up to she’s gonna have to deal with it. She’ll get better with time. Now we have the two of them pastured togetherso eventually they’ll bond and learn to work better together. She’s not TOO bad now but she could be better.

Incredible ground. I would kill to plow land like that

Flat ground, lots of sand and NO STONES in this field. Oh did I mention as well that it is right behind the house probably 200′ from the barn. We’re super lucky to have good ground here to have fun. This field itself is about 20 acres or so so I’ll have plenty of ground to have fun on until we have to buckle down and get it planted in the spring. Usually we’ll call a few friends and have 6 or 7 teams working out there in the Spring.

Bumpus- I know what you’re saying but it’s one of those, “That’s how my grand dad did it, how his dad did it and how his dad before him did it.” kinda things.

Nice cultivator. Wish I had one of those for the potato garden!

And a random shot of our dumb cat who is grooming in the dirt and a flock of cranes going overhead.

And here’s my first time on the walking plow. Heather was awesome as usual. Before grandpa came out Heather was driving the team and I was running the plow while I got used to how it works. Then she ran the camera for the rest of the day. Don’t know what I’d do without her!

What you are seeing here is the first time grandpa’s gotten to use his old walking plow in 20 years! He only was able to go a few feet (maybe 50 or 60) but man you should have seen him smile! I was so glad he got to do it for even a short time.

A couple meeting of the minds pics. We were discussing line lengths and how to get the HOT ROD horse on the left to slow down a little bit. Then it hit me….. plow deeper! lol

I turned my team over to Grandpa for a round so he could see what a good team works like! lol j/k Oh yeah, the left hand horse is his. That’s the one I’ve had the speeding problems with.

    Hi Dave,

If you’re planning on buying and using a McD mower in the future, it never hurts to have a parts machine around. At $65 you almost can’t miss and Kuna’s pretty close to Nampa – right? Good luck.

I second this notion. Buy it “JUST IN CASE”!!!;)

I might have to look at this closer. I was figuring if I got three or four and staked them out while I was out there cleaning up loose brush and let them eat up around where I wanted to cut the next day. Interesting thought. Thanks.
