I was actually helping a kid a home train a pair of my uncle’s charolais steers. These have great temperaments, some do not. As for the feet I am not sure.

There are a couple of pictures in Drew Conroy’s book on oxen.

no experience with oxen, but the bulls of this breed we handle are renown for their ability to kick quick, good and high 🙁

The Charolais that I worked with were not cattle for the novice.

Friends of mine raise Angus, the youngest son wanted a pair of young Charolais heifers that they saw at a sale. They were the rankest show animals that they ever brought to any fair, even after more handling and training than the Angus. One heifer was beefed after numerous attempts to get her bred, the other delivered her calf while she was down hill half way in the pond, she died but fortunately the calf was still alive when they found him after work. Bottle feeding did him wonders, he was a superstar at two county fairs and is the easiest bull to handle on the farm.

My Grandfather bought two Charolais cows to add to his beef herd years ago. They were more suspicious than the Hereford and Angus cows. They butchered a steer out of one of them and it was tough. You could hardly chew the hamburger. The propreitor of the local butcher shop also claims they make some of the worst beef. As far as working animals I wouldn’t know after trying to eat that one I never wanted anything to do with them. As a rule most beef breeds are rugged and have strong legs and feet but weight is an issue as they easily become too fat.

Fat should not be a problem. They have the same problem that I have, The boss feeds them to well and does not work them enough.
