ModeratorI received this e-mail yesterday. If there are interested folks in that region contact Andy.
Hi Carl
As I understand was discussed at the end of animal power days http://www.draftanimalpowernetwork.org this year there is a general interest in your network in promoting more local draft events. There are a local draft events going on in my area that could use your networking to get more people to come who want to learn about working with draft animals.
These guys, The Endless Mountain Draft Horse Club http://www.drafthorseclub.org/, have been displaying drafts for years at events open to the public. They have some what of a museum mantality in my judgement, but also always seek to teach new people about draft animals. I said to them that I could help them with advertising in circles that contain folks who want to learn to really farm with draft power. They said come to our club meeting.
The next meeting is Sunday Feb. 6, 2011 at the Athen’s PA Township Municipal Building at 1:30 PM.
Directions as follows: Rt. 17 (86) –Exit 60–to Rt.20–First Exit–at end of ramp–go Left to light–go Right on to N. Elmira St.–go Past WALMART (which is on your right) turn Left after P&C–First drive way on Left is Athen’s Township Municipal Building.
Carl I was hoping
1. that someone from your network with some interest and skill in helping to put the word out could come to this meeting.
2. that through your network, as well as other sustainable farming networks, this clubs events could be promoted so more folks wanting to learn from a bunch of talented teamsters could come.
I am thinking that knowing how the Endless Mt. Draft event are usually done to make the following suggestions.
1. They have a very trust worth horse in harness in a roped off area for everyone age 4-90 to ground drive with supervision.
2. I bring my oxen who have done exactly the above at other events and do the same, plus some plowing or other work demonstration.
3. In advertising the event to your networks and other sustainable farming networks saying what special skills and breeds the teamsters will have there. Then ask attendees before hand what they would like to learn a little about. Then where possible prearranged before the event between an attending teamster and person(s) have this question/learning interest a time during the event to meet up.
4. If one person in the club would communicate and cordinate the above within the club, I would help with getting the word out to networks like yours.
5. Invite individual teamsters involved in Draft Animal Power Network to the events who are in the area and would be ok’ed by the club members to come.
I am mostly looking for the Club to take these ideas and decide what they want to do. If you or some you know might have ideas to also present to this club perhaps they would also let them come to this meeting.
Hope to hear from you soon
