Participantlooks like my horses finally figured out theres no power in the fence . i turned it off in november when it snowed and the snow got so deep the top wire was only a foot and a half or so above. they got out today , so i guess im going to put a high strand up for 200-250 feet with the charger hooked to it before they go out again. will have to disconnect the rest of the fence til april when the snow melts….mink
February 22, 2011 at 11:55 pm #65873Participantwondering what others do in deep snow areas for fencing around their barns. i keep my horses in every nite but they go outside in the light with a round bale . they seem to stay within a few hundred feet of the barn most days.

ParticipantCan you do step-in posts and electrobraid or hot tape? 200-250 feet is a lot of step-in posts, as far as my budget is concerned, but that hot wire a foot and a half above the snow sounds dangerous.

Participantall you need is an occasional shock to keep ’em honest (most of ’em). They know where the fence is if it’s in the same place (permanent). If they get out, I juice it up and wait for them to repeat their breakout. That usually settles them down.

ParticipantI am with Jen, I hope they do not figure it out. I had a Haflinger that would test the fence and I ended up running solid aluminum wire and after a couple of hits he got the idea again.
