Farm Collar vs. Pulling Collar

I mentioned in a previous thread that we will be investing in some new collars. We currently have “farm” collars and they seem to be holding up alright after 3 years although the big stitching is coming undone. Can any of you enlighten me on the differences of farm vs. pulling collars? Is there just more padding in a pulling collar or are they more ruggedly made? Is it worth investing in a pulling collar? I log with my horses during the winter and farm (haying, spreading manure, cultivating, etc.) during the other months.

I have had this same question come up when replacing collars. I took in a Belgian in Maine who came with harness, including a pulling style collar. It was certainly bulky and well-made, but I did not see enough of a difference to justify the increased price to purchase one. I have had good luck with well made farm collars, though it is worth investing in a good one. Others with more experience using the pulling style may know more…

I have used farm collars alot in the past and I have also used some pulling collars. One of the biggest differences I saw was the clearance around the wind pipe on a pulling collar and the hame bed is often deeper. Just my .02
