ParticipantI read somewhere (i can’t remember where) that cattle dewormer will also kill or control the mites that make a steers horns flaky. Anybody know anything about this?

ParticipantHi Tom –
I didn’t even know there was a mite that made horns flaky but could believe that a systemic product like maybe ivermectin could work. I’d like to hear more about it.

ModeratorI tried to look it up but only found horn flies not horn mites. Mine started to get really flaky during all of that rain from Lee. I let them dry for a couple days and took the course grit to them. They both look better now, but one still has some serious growth rings from their Easter Sunday parasite issue that has long been cleared up.

ParticipantI am sure I read somewhere that deworming cattle improved their horn quality but I can’t remember where. Most likely here or Rural Heritage. My steers have terrible horns, not sure I could even sand enough off to make them smooth. Maybe I’ll just try some dewormer and see what happens. I’ll report back and let you know if it works.
