ParticipantI am trying to figure out what mower guards will fit my JD No. 4 mower. The JD dealer actually cam up with a number but they do not fit, I am sure the number crossed MANY times up until now. I am actually impressed that even made an attempt. Since this is a popular mower I figured someone must have figured out what will work on it.

ParticipantGive these guys a call. They might know what you can use as replacements.

Participanthi billy, call hall’s in windham, and ask for the part number for the guard for a no. 5 mower. it was the first tractor mounted mower jd made and a good mower and very common here instate. if he gives you the same part number as the guard you have that doesn’t fit, no good, but if he gives you a different number, it will fit your mower.

KeymasterHave you tried a regular haybine guard? My experience with JD is limited, but on the machines I have seen or worked on the same guards fit as on a McD. It is the knife in most JD that has a slightly different hole spacing. The guard spacing is usually three inches.

ParticipantBilly, I have had the same experience as Donn. I rebuilt a Big 4 this past winter and ended up putting haybine guards on it and it is working great. The guards I took off it were half McD guards…. I was not able to find a JD single guard to fit (new). good luck and let us know what you end up doing. Jay

ParticipantThe guards I originally got from JD bolted up to the bar but the cutting surface of the guard was to low, the knife section was about 1/4″ away from it when I installed the knife. I compared the new JD guards to the old ones and there was an obvious difference between them. Mitch I could try a guard for a #5 BUT I think I am going to see if I can come up with something else since it was over $300 for the guards from JD. The sad part was TSC had the same exact guards as JD had, and the ones from JD were not even green :-).
I will look into the haybine guards and see how that goes. Geoff do you remember what model haybine those guards fit?Billy

KeymasterMost of the haybine guards say NH 218 on them or something to that effect. I don’t think you need a haybine model number. Just ask for standard double guards.

Participanthi billy, thought i would lobbie one more time for the single guards. the double guards will be a couple hundred dollars at $16-18 each, and don’t have a ledgeplate. i had my best luck with smooth sections and ledgeplates on the guards, BUT…..thats personal preverence only. still need a pole?

ParticipantTruth is I will most likely use whatever I find first. Yes I did find a pole. I used a pole for a pioneer forcart modified a little. I figured if you were able to cut out a pole I would still be interested in it since I am in need for another for my disc. If you find yourself sawing out some poles put my name on one of them.
I found an old post about guards that had some talk about using a few open guards on the inside. This makes sense since it would not clog as easily I suspect. I will have to keep my eye open for these as well. Donn mentioned Pea guards in the post…I suspect these are pretty hard to come by these days.

ParticipantBilly – can’t remember which haybine guards I used but I got them from Master Equipment (and I do think the number was 2** – 215, 218 or something like that – they’ll know). Also got 3 stub guards there too (shorter guards with no tops on them).
BTW – got my metal grass “board” today so have to see how it fits here pretty soon.
