ParticipantDoes anyone know what the original mower gearbox cover gaskets were made of? What have you had success with? I’ve used permatex on my No.7 and it does work, but it does glue the cover to the frame and makes it difficult to get off. The No.7 owner’s manual does not even list the gasket in the part index.

ParticipantIn my experience, the #7 has a gasket semi permenantly imbedded in the cover, while the #9 has/has a cork gasket. Norm Macknair sells them (among others). They seem expensive until you factor in the whole of the center inside the gasket is wasted i.e. can’t be used for another #9 gasket. I have tried inner tube (knowing the oil will eat it over time) and so far it seems to work. I put some gasket cement on it. On the #7s, I just try to take care of the material that is in the cover. KeymasterNorm sells them but last time I talked with him, he recommended just using a liquid gasket product like this gasket maker. That’s what I’ve used and it works great!
My one hesitation was making the cover difficult to get off but I realized that I don’t really need to take them apart that often anyway. If I do it once a year to take a look, that seems like not such a huge deal.
